Soil and ground certification still runs on decades-old, analog equipment: imprecise, operator-dependent, and in most cases built around a licensed radioactive source. SPARTA brings 21st century space-grade hardware to soil testing for construction, infrastructure, civil engineering, agriculture and snow science, with no radioactive source. More properties measured per insertion, in minutes rather than days, by one person.

SPARTA is our first instrument: one probe, one insertion, four independent measurements of the ground. Penetration resistance, shear strength, thermal conductivity and dielectric response, for water and ice content. The underlying sensing was developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; the instrument we build is a separate derived design, re-engineered for terrestrial use, with no radioactive source.

Modern infrastructure is still certified with decades-old equipment.
Infrastructure is being built at a rate the world has not seen in generations: data centers, transmission lines, highways, canals, embankments, roads, bridges, and more. Yet the equipment certifying the ground under all of it is decades old. Analog, slow, imprecise enough that two technicians on the same lift can return different answers, and still built around a sealed radioactive source, with the federal license, locked cage and badged operator that come with it.

Prospecting is an old word. It used to mean walking out with a pick and finding out for yourself what the ground was made of. We would like to keep doing that, a bit further out.
Inside this decade, national agencies and commercial operators intend to put landers, power plants, habitats and mining equipment on the lunar south pole. Dozens of touchdowns going to a few square kilometers of permanently shadowed, rocky, and unstable ground. They are going for water ice to make propellant, for regolith to build and shield with, and for a surface flat and firm enough to land on reliably.
Almost everything known about the surfaces of alien worlds, including the Moon, is inferred from orbit. The most important geophyscial properties of lunar and martian regolith can not be settled from a photograph.
That is where we sit. Interplanetary Prospecting Corporation was founded in 2026 in Pasadena, California, and we build field instruments and the surveys to make sure we know the surface of the Moon, Mars, and beyond as well as that of Earth.

The underlying sensing was developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. What are building now is a separate design derived from that work and re-engineered for terrestrial use: ordinary sites, ordinary crews, a result in minutes, and no radioactive source to license, store or transport.
